Establishing a Happy, Healthy Baby Bedtime Routine

You’re already exhausted with a new-born baby in the house, but when it comes to bedtime, it really can seem to all fall down around you quickly – with baby not sleeping, you not sleeping and everything culminating in stress, tears and desperate pleas with a child that has yet to command English! (Bedtime Sucks eh?_

Establishing a bedtime routine for your baby can seem difficult, but really there’s no set way to do it and no set routine that works for everyone. Your little one is an individual, and what works for others may not work for them. It will take patience, but trial and error will yield success when you find the right mix for little one.

Baby’s bedtime routine does not just need to include a bath, pyjamas on, a lullaby and then a lie-down. Try changing into pyjamas earlier, to give time to settle and snuggle in. If music isn’t the way to your baby’s heart, just speaking or reading may be enough of a comfort to send them off to sleep. If your little boy or girl gets excited at bath time, save that for the day and instead try massaging baby’s skin gently with warm hands to relax them. Wind down and don’t go straight from loud from silent, but make the transition smoother. Calm playtime and a device-free-zone should also contribute to the winding down, but don’t get frustrated if things don’t work out first time. The key word here is ‘routine’, and once your little darling is used to the way things work and the order it all happens, they’ll soon get used to kicking back, relaxing and nodding off quietly.
